Flight to Bahía Solano

Bahía Solano is a very remote and undeveloped region of Colombia and it is impossible to reach by car. It can be accessed by airplane or boat only! Because we were coming from Bogotá (we had a one-night stopover there after Cartagena), our option was airplane. I had some warning that it could be an interesting journey when we read in the guidebook that the tagline of the Bahía Solano Airport is “get out if you can.” The frequent storms in the area can make it challenging or impossible to land and or take off. The people at the hotel we booked also emphasized several times to message them when our plane is taking off because “they frequently don’t leave on time.” I was starting to wonder what I got myself into.

The flight from Bogotá to Medellín for our layover was smooth and normal, albeit my first ride in a propeller plane! It was bigger than I expected and did not feel too out of the ordinary. Like a quick hop from Detroit to Chicago!

Then when we went to board the flight from Medellín to Bahía Solano, I got my first glimpse of the airplane. An even smaller propeller plane! And it totally freaked me out.

When we got in, it was even more shocking to me. One seat on either side, no overhead space, and room for no more than 20 people. Alex was really getting a kick out of my apprehension. I can’t even really explain why I was so nervous, I guess because it was a very new experience for me. In the pic below, we were in row 3!

The propellers whirled into action and we started to taxi. It felt like we were taxiing forever, I just wanted to get off the ground already! As we started speeding up to take off, my heart beat faster and faster. And then we lifted off! Once we were in the air, I was finally able to relax. The small airport we flew out of was right in the middle of Medellín, so we got a lovely view of the city in our way out. The rest of the flight was beautiful, we flew over mountains the entire way.

Once the coast came into view we had an amazing view of the bay and the town we would be staying in. We landed without issue (while I white-knuckle gripped my arm rests) and I was able to put my worries aside until we depart on the 29th :). The second picture below is the Bahía Solano Airport which consists of a runway and a canopy. Love it!
